Online Multiplayer RPG Games

online-multiplayer-rpg-gamesThe face of online multiplayer free games has changed forever. Online Multiplayer RPG games are now extremely popular with all age-groupds and continue to attract new gamers from the traditional software games world (offline games).

Even television, newspapers and real world media are mentioning the likes of World of Warcraft (WoW) from Blizzard, Second Life, and more recently Evony from UMGE.

With the epicentre of online multiplayer gaming coming out of Asia (fed by Korea and China), the majority of Online Multiplayer RPG games are mostly free – this means they can bring in much more gamers than the traditional software based offline games world could ever do.

For example, it’s estimated at nearly 10 million gamers that challenge each other in the likes of games online such as Maplestory in countries such as Korea, China, and Japan.

But the early day were very hard for online MMO / MMORTS and MMORPG titles. One of the early pioneers in online gaming was ‘The Realm’ by Sierra. It rarely got enough funding from Sierra, but had they realised the potential – it could have been the first big winner. It could have achieved what Blizzard did with WoW, but maybe it was before it’s time.

Thinking back before the internet and online gaming exploded – you had Multiplayer RPGs in board based game Dungeons & Dragons – this being done with pencils, paper and die.

Some suggest that the roots of all these new age online multiplayer rpg games come from their board game cousins. Starting out at home, hobby shops or local hangouts – but now, anyone with a browser, internet access and a will to play online for free – can get access to great graphics, gameplay, sound and a user base of gamers from virtually any country in the world.

Scary isn’t it?
