Difficult Game

difficult-gameIn terms of a difficult game, there are plenty I can think of right up front – but one that really jumps out as a difficult game is Splinter Cell on the XBOX. This initial release required patience as a gamer, you really had to take your time and it took a long time to complete a level or progress to the final stages of the game.

Some other gamers have chimed in and they said that ‘Tomb Raider‘ the original release that was quite a difficult game to play. It was another 3D style game where you had to seek out items as well as progress through challenges and puzzles in the game.

Hard Core gamer Malcolm also said “What about Devil May Cry 3 (especially the final Boss Battle)?” – now theres a tough challenge. When I think back to early DOS games that posed as a difficult game – I think of Wolf3d without the cheats. Remember IDDQD and IDKFA which would get you unlimited lives and unlimited weapons.

I also spent hours on Wolf3d trying to find the secret mazes, remember pushing space bar on EVERY single wall? Now that was a difficult part of the game.

Then you faced the bosses with guns galore, chain saws and tonnes of lives – real hard core gaming. But sure, it was great fun.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES, explosions in the water ALWAYS killed players, and the electrified seaweed, many, many gamers got pissed off with this game very quickly. It was a tricky one to navigate at times.
And finally what about the ‘Alone in the Dark Game Series‘? Now this did sell a lot of copies, but we have heaps of gamers saying this game was WAY too difficult. Some saying it was a waste of many, too expensive for gaming software and pretty much wasted hours of my life. OUCH. Alone in the Dark reviews going off the scale here!
One last complaint from gamers about a difficult game was – Terminator Redemption(PS2). Had the game for 3 year and I’m still unable to pass the 4th level
After touching on some of these super hard games, it has led us to chat about some more good memories. We’ll look at doing a post on good old Wolfenstein3d (Wolf3d) by ID Software in the coming days. Man did we spend some hours on the game, from killing the dogs (German Shephards) in Wolf3d to eventually finding the chainsaw behind a secret door. (Hang on, maybe that was in the DOOM series?) There were quite a few offshoots such as Hexen and others too.
But honestly, after installing Wolf3d on a 286 computer with little if nothing in terms of memory and a basic SoundBlaster card – man, did that game go off at the time. We loved it and played it for hours on end. ID Software was really ground breaking at the time. Oh and Duke Nukem might be a good one to look into a bit more in the future too, certainly the 3D version with hardcore girls and unique ‘easter egg’ surprises in the game.
