You know the contenders, the Playstation from Sony, the XBOX from Microsoft and of course the Wii from Nintendo.

Well, traditionally, the Playstation range (PS1,PS2 and now PS3) have been heavyweights and usually see Sony sitting atop the loft – but recent results have shown a slide for the once king of consoles.

After releasing the Wii, Nintendo saw a great leap in their stocks. They started gaining ground once more against the big Sony and Microsoft giants. Nintendo was once the king of consoles too, along with Sega – but in recent years, they lacked creativity and really fell behind.

Their Wii console was unique however, and they soon picked up ground. One big problem however, has seen them too lagging back in recent months. Their lack of a high definition output from the console restricts their growth capacity – with tech savvy users wanting true HDMI connections for their big screen Plasma and LCD, LED televisions.

For Microsoft and the XBOX 360 however, its all been good news. They have picked up large chunks of market share during 2009 and more importantly boast the biggest sales in terms of software.

The money has never been in the actual console – most vendors sell these at cost or at times, slightly below cost. Once a strong base of consoles has been sold – the money comes from the software sales.

Thats why at the moment – when you ask “Which is the best games console?” – the winner has to be Microsoft and XBOX 360.

They are moving more software units and boast a great, ‘large’ range of software titles including a new game-changing karaoke title (with video clips!) and online song purchases that is toasting the competition over christmas 2009.

Well the catch is not what you would think it is, Evony IS free, and fully functional for free. Not like those free downloads that are actually just “teasers”. The catch is that Evony is addictive, but in a good way. Aside from being able to build cities (I now have two, and thriving very well thanks to a lot of help from my Alliance), command armies, and conquer valleys, the best part is that I get to make friends with some of the most fun people all over the world.

There are two ways to go about building your city: the first is to toughen up your defenses first (build walls and fortifications), or go on the offensive and build up a kicking army. Most everyone in my Alliance think that warehouses are almost useless, and have up to 12 barracks in their cities. We’re also considered as one of the friendlier Alliances at that.

We also all agree in getting the level of Informatics high as soon as possible. This keeps other people from seeing what you’re up to. When some high prestige player (higher prestige = bigger army, my prestige level is scary enough to newbies, but not nearly high enough to be considered as one of the “Big Boys” in my server) is scouting you, this might put them off for a while until you can get help or teleport out of there.

There are nights that I stay up late to chat with people about “Screaming Ladies” (what one ally and I call our warriors), or just about anything at all. There are also times when you can feel a lot of tension when one of your friends is getting attacked, and people in my Alliance have become real pros in reinforcing. If you’re a beginner and you don’t know what the embassy is for, it’s for your allies’ troops when they come to visit. Some players like training troops in big batches, which takes longer but you get the whole batch in one big shebang. I like training them in smaller numbers at different barracks.

Another thing that I like about Evony is that you can actually get a lot of work done while you’re waiting for your troops to get trained, or the results of your attack on a Barbarian City or resource valley(or another player) or a structure to get built up. It puts some players off, but it gives me time to step back into the real world, otherwise I’d be sitting on my ass all day clicking at tabs and buttons.

I clean out all my resources on one big build before I sleep or go out, and come back with a nice leveled up building, or more defensive measures, or higher research afterward. It’s also a good way to keep yourself from getting plundered, if your Archer Towers are the same number as the resources in your city, chances are other people will leave you alone.

I’m glad that my first online gaming experience was with Evony, and that I get to learn something new everyday.

Here we go …

1. Civilization – The turn based strategy masterpiece from the mind of Sid Meier. Well before it’s time, Civilization or ‘Civ’ as it was called opened a huge gaming world to players as they explored, built and fought wars in the early days of existence. This game covered so many angles, from strategy, planning, direct wars (fighting) and fairly good graphics and sound for its era. This title also spawned many in the series; from additional Civilization releases, expansion packs and the Colonization title which also remained popular in its own right. The only thing lacking was a multiplayer option which came with the later versions of this masterpiece. This was a clear winner with a stack of votes from our blog readers.

2. F1GP – Formula One Grand Prix on the PC was a groundbreaking gaming title on the computer. Microprose really lifted the bar here, with realistic track design and layout, top shelf graphics and real audio and amazingly a multiplayer offering that was a first at the time. The multiplayer option worked through the modem and in pre-internet and LAN gaming days, this was a real stunner. So good was F1GP that it was used by actual Formula 1 racing teams at the time as an assistant to new drivers wanting to learn new tracks.

3. Leisure Suit Larry – An entry into the Top 5 from the Sierra Gaming Houses. We didn’t realise we had so many ‘old school’ readers to our blog. But Larry certainly did have its following. A release in the late 80’s – this was a basic graphical offering with a text driven interface. The gamer had to ‘tell’ Leisure Suit Larry what to do as he sought to work the character through the real world with the end goal of getting ‘laid’. Certainly an interesting goal! But it had plenty of laughs and really showed a new side to PC gaming in the early days.

4. World of Warcraft – Seemingly the biggest money spinner in gaming history. World of Warcraft or WoW as it’s known, from Blizzard inc earns many millions of dollars for its owners each and every month. Few predicted how big massively multiplayer online gaming would become (Sierra certainly missed the boat here, they had one of the earliest MMORPG paid offerings called ‘The Realm’ which they shunned and it certainly cost them!) but Blizzard created an everest here and it continues to build, with expansion packs and new features. Not so much a graphical masterpiece, but the virtual world, multiplayer aspect and sheer size of this game have earned it a mammoth following with our younger readers obviously voting this PC game into the Top 5.

5. Wolf3d – Just edging out Counterstrike for the 5th slot, this classic from ID Games opened the doors to first person shooters everywhere. For those that had an Adlib or Soundblaster PCI card in their PC at the time – were blown away by the audio and of course top graphics from this game at the time. Good game speed, amazing story line and of course being able to blast Germans in World War 2 was a big bonus as gamers lined up to take this one to town. Secret levels, various weapons including a chainsaw that eventually came in the Doom sister series – this was a great all round winner for ID software and gamers everywhere.

Some titles just missing the cut; Counterstrike, Adventure Quest, Settlers, Airborne Ranger.

Putting aside the platform for a moment, the early Grand Theft Auto titles were fairly standard in their appearance and delivery until the ‘3D Style – world map’ appeared that allowed gamers to drive, shoot and ‘live’ through the eyes of a virtual world.

Originally debuting for the PC, the first few offerings from Rockstar Games around the GTA title were top down driver simulation games. With some shooting action, some missions, it was enjoyable and sold plenty of copies but it didn’t set the world on fire so to speak.

When Grand Theft Auto 3 was released, the first person design was breathtaking. As a gamer, you could steal a car, grab a gun and travel to all corners of this virtual world. An exciting concept and one that caught on quickly.

Soon after GTA3 was released, there were a few games trying to copy the similar design. The True Crime series was a a game trying to cash in on the new first person style that GTA3 has pioneered, what about Dead to Rights? And another game called the Getaway is very similar in some parts to the GTA3 style game.

There was GTA San Andreas soon after, a minor alteration and addition to the series that had bigger maps, better graphics, more cars and insane audio soundtracks.

Smartly, Rockstar games quickly released The Vice City version of GTA3. With strong links to the 1980’s gang wars, turf wars and drug cartels – it had the cars, music and real feel of the 80s. An amazing creation, you could get into a car and radio station would be playing tunes from that era as you sped down the freeway.

But as the popularity of GTA grew, it was quickly ported to the console world. XBOX, Playstation and the new models, 360 and PS2/PS3 soon got their hands on the popular franchise from Rockstar Games.

What was concerning about this, was that as the console world soon fell in love with GTA3 and associated titles just like the PC gamer had done before hand – suddenly the new released of GTA were being ‘debuted’ on the console and the PC would have to wait months and sometimes years to get their version.

Very frustrating to keen PC gamers.

The newer Grand Theft Auto 4 (GTAIV) went to console land first and took over 12 months to legitimately reach the PC gaming shelves.

Now we watch with interest as the latest installment, GTA China Town Wars comes to life. How long will PC gamers have to wait?

Regardless, it’s still an amazing game and one that will not be forgotten. One recent development that looks exciting is the GTA Mod Scene. Starting out with SA-MP (GTA San Andreas Multiplayer) – gamers could get in game and compete against other players.

While a little buggy at first, understandable given its freeware origins. It has gained a huge following and there now are a large range of GTA Mods, many centred around San Andreas – but others are more niche based and allow the GTA series to be taken to a whole new level.

When was the game of checkers invented? Well most reports say it was developed around 350 BC somewhere in China. And has remained extremely popular all around the world ever since. Probably never reaching the heights and popularity of chess so may say, but certainly well known and massively played in all corners of the globe.

However, according to answers.com here is what they say about the board game of checkers and its invention:

“A board game that appeared very similar to checkers (called “Draughts” in Great Britain} was discovered in the ruins of the ancient city of Ur in modern day Iraq. This board game dates to about 3000 B.C. Checkers as we know it today has been around since 1400 B.C. In Egypt, a similar game was called Alquerque.”

There are some variants on the game (which can also be played online) but the basic checkers game is easily found in a search engine and you can be playing within minutes.

At games for the brain which we mentioned above – you can also try some of the following games which are exciting and addictive for players: mine hunter, Mahjongg Solitaire, Guess the Flag, Reversi or Sudoku.

Left for Dead 2

The demand for this new game, while it might be stronger than for the average gaming software title – is certainly no reflected through internet chatter and interest. As of 5th October (12 days before official release date) their is no upward google trend on discussion around Left for Dead 2 and search patterns for cheats, hacks, walkthroughs and other game trainers are no where to be seen!

Valve is apparently going to spend 25 million USD advertising Left for Dead 2 – specifically targeting the holiday gaming crowd. This is a smart move, but any talk of this game outstripped the Half Life franchise seems very premature.

We jumped on the gaming forums and found most users saying the same thing. Valve fanboys were more interested in the release of Halflife3 or certainly the next chapter in the half life series as opposed to any talk about the leftfordead game.

Valve software have a history of making some great games, their ability remains market leading – however sometimes spinning the media too much or tripping over delayed releases (such as the long delayed team fortress 2) can cause more harm than good in the gamers eyes.

Sure, most gamers will not turn away from any new release in the halflife franchise, but lets not be unrealistic and try and spin the leftfordead2 game as the ‘biggest game release ever’ – because that seems a little way off the mark guys!

How has Prince of Persia changed since its early release?

Almost everything from the original Jordan Mechner game and character has changed here and this is definitely a different Prince. The story does not seem to be a continuation of the series, except for a few elements borrowed from Sands of Time. The look of our dear Prince has been changed too. More graphic detail has been added to him – he now has a muscular body rather than the lithe athletic body he had before and his face has turned from Aladdin-like to being raggedy. This Prince looks more of a vagabond than anything else.

The game play has changed drastically too. In any game, the main focus is on killing enemies, but in Prince of Persia (2008), the focus is on resurrecting people! In that way, this is a ‘constructive’ game rather than a ‘destructive’ one. But fans of the previous Prince games will find this one very easy to play. There are helpful hints such as homing orbs strewn around everywhere and there are more tele-porters now, which makes Prince’s task much, much simpler. If you sit at a stretch, you could complete the game from start to finish within 12 hours.

However, these changes are definitely not to indicate the game is a poor show. On the contrary, Prince of Persia is one of the most visually stunning and the most engrossing games of 2009. If you are able to lay the mantle of the previous Prince aside, which should not be too difficult to those who have entered later in the series, you will thoroughly enjoy our new avatar of the nameless Prince. There is definitely a good storyline, though not much of a continuation, and the most significant feature of the game is the fighting action. If you are fans of sword fighting in games, Prince of Persia (2008) holds its ground just like its predecessors have.

The most unique and interesting aspect of Prince of Persia (2008) is the character of Elika, whose father has helped to release the evil god Ahriman. She is Prince’s loyal and trusty sidekick during most of the game. But no, Elika is not just a sidekick, she is much more. She is a complete parallel character, and you are playing not one but two characters here. There are some interesting features put on here. When the Prince jumps, Elika will jump with him. When he walks on narrow ledges, she will hop on his back! And if he happens to fall off vines, she will grab his hand and pull him back! In this way, the Prince of Persia (2008) will never get over abruptly because the Prince dies. Because, as a matter of fact, he never dies!

Now, if you like that bit about Prince of Persia, go ahead and play this game by all means. Despite the sea of changes, the basic maneuvers of Prince, such as jumping, swinging, wall running, etc. are all there. There is also an amazing roof running feature which is sure to make you press the action button again and again just to see how Prince does this act.

So many of us grew to love those original DOS games, we had out x86 (initially a 286 machine for me) then wow, a 386 DX! and then came the IBM PS1 486sx – ok, I’ll stop. I am getting carried away here. But I started with MS-Dos, then tried Digital Research Dos – but eventually came back to good old Bill Gates DOS masterpiece.

Now, with so many cool DOS games titles – the good folks at Dosbox put it all together by offering a cool emulator. Its free to download dosbox, but we highly recommend offering a donation to the project, as these guys have really done so well.

The other thing is Dosbox Help is always close at hand, they will not leave you high and dry. There are tonnes of users developing front ends and other cool stuff for it, so don’t delay just get over and download Dosbox now.

Probably the biggest thing that got me excited about the Dosbox emulation, was the kick butt Dosbox sound. Before this, I could get the odd old school Dos game to run on Windows XP – but I couldn’t get audio / sound for the old Dos game. (One of my favourites was Sid Meiers Colinization). Pre-Dosbox I could only get it without sound, but now, it fires to life and it brings back all those Soundblaster Pro and Adlib Memories. (I never got to test out the Roland sound cards, my family was poor! haha)

dosbox 0.65 was the latest release version of the emulator, but now – dosbox v0.73 (v0.72 superseeded) is available and well tested. Even the new front ends are tested with the newest release, ready for download.

As you setup your new download of Dosbox for Windows; it’s time to pick and choose the cool games you are going to play:

Interestingly, the most popular DOS game to kick things off is Lemmings on Dosbox. The old classic, is being played in big numbers by folks in the Dosbox world.

Now if you want to Use  Dosbox for other games, I recommend heading over to Dosgames.com to get an idea of all the games you can download, play and choose. They have over 500 titles and if you can’t find gaming heaven there – then you will never find it.

We could only get our hands on Dosbox 0.72 for the purposes of testing on our Windows XP machine and after download, it ran flawlessly.
