With the explosion of the MMO gaming market for the browser in the past 2 years, there have been a host of unique, highly detailed free games – but sadly, not everyone can find them.

We’re talking the likes of Evony Free Forever, the Grepolis Game, Adventure Quest Worlds and so many more.

Even with these popular MMORPG / MMORTS style games, offering free accounts and logins – there are more popping up almost monthly.

The latest coming to gamers is War of Legends, a strategy game with smart graphics and a great story line taking gamers on a journey all through the browser.

Years ago, gamers at school or home might turn to a basic browser game or ported game such as Pacman, Prince of Persia or a Car/Bike Simulation game that was a basic browser version to kill some time.

Lets hope the new Google caffine search engine setup allows for the faster, easier discovery of links to these hot online games. They are a bunch of fun to play, easy to learn and will keep players entertained for weeks on end.

Some other recent releases and popular online games titles that are free include TribalWars and TheWest by Innogames. This designer has impressed with hot new gaming titles that are originally out of Germany but now have a massive worldwide english gaming following.

Thewest game is unlike anything else online and with keep simulation fans entertained for long periods.

New online MMO titles are popping up almost weekly with two new additions; World of Lordcraft and EmpireCraft recently coming into the fray as free web strategy games.

For World of Lordcraft, its a closely linked browser version of the existing Blizzard title World of Warcraft.

While not released by Blizzard, it will be interesting to see if any legal action is filed given this game is very, very similar to the existing software oriented MMORPG.

Regardless of this, serious browser gaming fans will be impressed by the graphics, gameplay and options available in Lordcraft. With additional races, classes and most importantly battle grounds and battle modes – big strategy fans will love it.

Given the restrictions on 2D java gaming, this is a fairly good effort and will attract a strong following in the coming months. It will need to work hard, given Evony continues to lead the way, Grepolis Game from Innogames continues to grow as does others such as Adventure Quest Worlds.

Another newbie to the gaming scene is EmpireCraft, probably aimed more at younger more simplistic oriented gamers, this interface, graphics and gameplay are very basic and will not appeal to professional MMO gamers wanting a long, addictive expereince.

Well, it’s certainly got to be free and fortunately, most new MMO game releases have been free. Just giving us the option to extend our gaming experience through purchasing additional access, usually through game coins.

Now, next should be the visuals. A free online MMO with good graphics is a critical component. While the browser based gaming limits what software developers can do with a game – those crisp, cutting edge graphics need to be cool.

Coming in 3rd, would you say Sound Quality or Sound Track for the MMO?

Nope, you guessed wrong. Most gamers under the age of 23 will insist on have at least a few hundred thousand gamer accounts already established in the MMO before the jump on board. A tough ask? Sure is, so you need plenty of guinea pigs and beta testers signed up early for new game releases before new accounts will signup and then the thing goes viral.

Finally, the last ingredient is playability.

Last you say!?! Well, while some insist on playability and addictiveness of the game – in real life, most gamers will check the other points first. Even if they are unhappy with the storyline of a new MMO game, or dislike the end game or whatever, they’ll hang around if all their friends and a good majority of the internet are playing this game.

And to really send the free online MMO into viral mode, with millions of signups – it wouldn’t be complete without a hardcore advertising campaign. And no one does this better than those guys at Evony.

Those Evony Ads are everywhere on the internet, like or hate the evony ads – they do work. People will get into the game, just to see what it’s all about.

So thinking you’ll design a free online game? It’s hard work and these days, to crack the big time in the BBG space – you’ll need a largeish team of developers and other guys on board too.

We’ve touch on the Grepolis Game in recent days and devoted time to the Evony Game also.

From the makers of Grepolis the other MMO title they offer is an online game called ‘The West’. A good choice of game theme here, with so many looking at the medieval, space-age or mythology age – the Wild West as yet hasn’t been overdone and offers a good unique experience for the web gamer.

The West is still a quest based game, but you can choose to build your western town, fight other players or develop skills that will help you navigate life in the West.

An easy to play game, with good support options. The West is easy to get into and you’ll be up and running in no time.

The only complaint from gamers is that the graphics are a little poor when compared to recent standards from new online games.

Web Diplomacy Game – is a free MMO game online, which is like the board game – RISK.

Conquer the world map, with up to 25 nations or players involved. Attack enemies, make pacts and tread carefully with other opponents. This game is a high strategy affair, with a focus more on good game-play as opposed to graphics and big flair.

Highly addictive gameplay, join with friends as allies and form an alliance.

The only problem with this game is that at times, the length of turn can be quite drawn out – a little frustrating for serious gamers.

The eRepublik Game is a market leader in the MMO space. This free online game basically lets you do whatever you what in the virtual world. You choose you home country or state, build the home base up and eventually go to work. Working will earn you additional funds – and continued success could lead you to run for president in this virtual world. In eRepublik you can go to war, defend your turf, develop money making opportunities or make allies with other world players.

When started as Civony, the amount of users playing the game was a good start for UMGE – the company soon pushing ahead with larger scale development – more servers, and eventually the full release evony game – which was to be titled evony free forever.

Despite constant harassment by competitors, critics and non-gamers – evony has proved a winner, keeping large amounts of evony login accounts and players interested for long periods of time.

Additional servers for Chinese and Western based players along with expansion, improvements etc – will surely keep players interested. Some have suggested that evony login use may be eventually restricted to ‘pay per play’ users only, but this has yet to be established with the software game developers.

The game can be run on almost any computer, however you do have to download a big client, which is not that big of a deal considering almost everybody uses broadband anyway. A very unique concept here. Unlike most game developers, the Planeshift team intends on keeping this game free. Eventually player houses, a very nice combat system (with a much better magic system that Runescape) and a full scale economy will be developed. The great thing about joining a developing game is being able to master the game before the mainstream gamer crowd flocks to it. Of course, you’ll never completely be able to master it since many features are still in development, you can still submit your input on the game, which the developers will take into much more consideration compared to Runescape and other games like Runescape. You get to choose from several races, dwarves, elves, humans, and more. There are several variations within with unique names and features such as Ylians, Dermorians, Clan Stonebreakers, and Klyros. I highly suggest taking a look at this game and keeping an eye on it’s development because it seems very promising.

3. Knight Online

Ok ok, before determining whether it’s a worthy game comparable to Runescape, let’s take a look at what they claim… They claim to have heart-pumping PvP in a Fantasy MMORPG where you can choose sides in an epic conflict between El Morad and Karus. Does this sound like Runescape? Sounds more like WoW. Anywho, moving on. You get to decide between a sorcery-wielding mage, a stoic Priest, a bone-crushing warrior, or shadowy Rogue. You can fight in bi-weekly wars and castle sieges as well. You can fight in a permanent PvP environment. Okay. PERMANENT PvP environment. I like the sound of that. It basically sounds up like a beefed up version of Runescape. I like the concept. This is definitely a full screen client, unlike Runescape. The graphics are much better than Runescape as well. Viewing the screenshots on their main sight, it appears that they have marketplaces and huge congregations just like Runescape. I’m going to check this game out further, and I may consider it as a feature game of the month

With highly impressive game graphics, interface and audio – evony (formerly called civony) went live to the public in May 2009 and now has a staggering 8 million registered accounts.

The popularity of the game led to its owners UMGE seemingly turning over a good profit, expanding the game, running a highly powerful AdSense campaign and eventually finding themselves in court with a blog author by the name of Bruce Everiss.

Some (including Everiss) has said that Evony plonked spyware into users PCs when they play the actual game and now an anonymous software developer has recently started throwing up posts regarding what Evony does in terms of ‘ports’ on a users computer when they play.

Now most basic gamers don’t monitor their ports, certainly the youngersters using mummy and daddies PC wouldn’t have the know-how to know whats going on behind the scenes and ports and being used in numerous ways.

With Evony it now seems there are several cookies placed on the users PC that simply ‘track’ what else is running on the client PC.

Harmless? Maybe.

But it depends how this is being monitored, harness and eventually used.

Depending on how well UMGE manage this, they could potentially sell off the information if it was well cataloged and up to date.

So while its not time to pull down the windows shutters, it always pays to be cautious about whats happening on your PC. Also, time to invest in a decent port monitoring / blocking software to ensure your online gaming is safe and free from prying eyes.

Left for Dead 2

The demand for this new game, while it might be stronger than for the average gaming software title – is certainly no reflected through internet chatter and interest. As of 5th October (12 days before official release date) their is no upward google trend on discussion around Left for Dead 2 and search patterns for cheats, hacks, walkthroughs and other game trainers are no where to be seen!

Valve is apparently going to spend 25 million USD advertising Left for Dead 2 – specifically targeting the holiday gaming crowd. This is a smart move, but any talk of this game outstripped the Half Life franchise seems very premature.

We jumped on the gaming forums and found most users saying the same thing. Valve fanboys were more interested in the release of Halflife3 or certainly the next chapter in the half life series as opposed to any talk about the leftfordead game.

Valve software have a history of making some great games, their ability remains market leading – however sometimes spinning the media too much or tripping over delayed releases (such as the long delayed team fortress 2) can cause more harm than good in the gamers eyes.

Sure, most gamers will not turn away from any new release in the halflife franchise, but lets not be unrealistic and try and spin the leftfordead2 game as the ‘biggest game release ever’ – because that seems a little way off the mark guys!
